An Irish backpacker pleaded guilty to helping a group of asylum seekers mount an escape from the Woomera detention center in Australia’s outback.
Jonathon Joseph O’Shea, 22, of Cork was sentenced to two months in jail for aiding and abetting the breakout, the Port Augusta Magistrates Court said.
But one month of the sentence was suspended, and because of time already served, O’Shea will be released Aug. 3. A total of 35 asylum seekers made a run for freedom June 27 after supporters used cars to haul down fences surrounding the camp. Eight people remain at large.
