Teaching Shouldn’t Be a ‘Well, Why Not?’ Career

We are facing a teacher shortage, so what does the state do? It looks for laid-off people in the technology world. I guess there is still the myth that anyone can teach. This is not their career choice; it’s just a path of convenience. I guess if we had a shortage of doctors, we would look at the unemployment lines to find some replacements. If we can put unlicensed people in the classroom, why not the doctor’s office?
Oh, but this is different. It is just kids. Well, not my child. She will not have a non-credentialed teacher in her classroom. Teaching is a passion, a chosen field, not a “Well, why not?” career. What a disservice, again, to the career of teaching and to the children who will have these untrained, laid-off people in their classrooms.
