A federal grand jury in Miami indicted four police officers on charges they severely beat a handcuffed suspect. A fifth officer was indicted on charges he lied to investigators after killing a mentally ill man.
The suspect who allegedly was beaten, Alexander Anazco, had been arrested in February 1997 while driving a vehicle used by someone who had thrown a rock at an officer’s car, said U.S. Atty. Guy Lewis. Officers Jesus Aguero, Jorge Garcia, Wilfredo Perez and Jorge Castello could face 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
In the other case, Officer Alejandro Macias was charged with obstructing justice for the March 1999 fatal shooting of Jesse Runnels, a psychiatric patient who was attempting to commit suicide.
