Ban on ‘Head Shops’ Near Schools Proposed

From Times Staff Reports
The City Council agreed Friday to draft an ordinance that would ban so-called head shops within 500 feet of schools.
The council took action at the request of Fairfax High School students and their parents, who were angered when they discovered a store stocked with water pipes, drug-themed T-shirts and cigarettes just yards away from the Melrose Avenue school.
A final draft of the ordinance--which would bar similar shops from operating near schools in the future--will be presented to city lawmakers later this month.
