Budget Forces Cuts to Colleges, Social Services

Gov. Bob Holden announced $83 million in funding cuts to state colleges and universities and said 6,000 state employees will go without pay for two days next month to help cover a budget shortfall.
State money also will be withheld from nursing homes, social services and job training, meaning the latest round of cuts could be felt by thousands of people.
“I’m sorry,” said Holden, a Democrat, as he blamed House Republicans for the cuts. “Constitutionally I have a responsibility to keep this budget in balance.” He is trying to close an expected $230-million gap in the $19-billion budget for the fiscal year ending June 30.
