Los Alamitos’ Murphy Gets CIF Award

Shay Murphy of Los Alamitos High and Scotti Nicole Shafer of Carlsbad have been selected the 2002 CIF Scholar-Athletes of the Year. Each will receive a $2,000 college scholarship and be honored in Sacramento on June 20.
Murphy, a linebacker, was selected the Sunset League’s player of the year and defensive player of the year in football, setting a school record for most career tackles. He has a 4.11 grade-point average and will attend Columbia University.
Shafer is the San Diego Section girls’ water polo player of the year. She has a 4.16 GPA and will attend Stanford.
