Council Delays Vote on School Board Districts

The Los Angeles City Council postponed voting Tuesday on a plan to redraw the district boundaries of the city’s school board.
Several council members asked for more time to evaluate the map recommended last week by a council panel and another map proposed by Councilman Ed Reyes. The redrawing of the Los Angeles Board of Education’s district boundaries, which occurs every 10 years to reflect demographic shifts, has divided the board’s seven members. The favored plan, critics say, disenfranchises the San Fernando Valley and unfairly shores up support for certain incumbent board members. The council will reconsider the proposals Tuesday.
