$1.9 Million to Make School Routes Safer

Seven Orange County cities will get a total of $1.9 million in federal funds to improve safety along the routes to 37 public and private schools.
The money is part of $22 million being spent statewide to support 87 projects, including striping streets and installing pavement markers, pedestrian rail crossings and crosswalk lights.
The Orange County money will be used for seven schools in Buena Park, 14 in Garden Grove, three each in La Habra and Laguna Beach, seven in Santa Ana, one in Stanton and two in Tustin.
Also, the state released $7.2 million for 23 bicycle-related projects, an annual stipend that will run through 2006. The only money Orange County received was $750,000 toward the $2.5-million cost for a bicycle bridge over Jeffrey Road at the San Diego Freeway in Irvine.
