Ryder Should Do Time

Re “Ryder Found Guilty in Shoplifting Case,” Nov. 7: Only probation -- why bother? Winona Ryder gets convicted of grand theft and vandalism and then the prosecutors say they will ask only for probation.

Why bother with a trial? The thought of doing time for your crime is suppose to be a deterrent to crime. But that is only the case if jail time is applied. Granted, three years (the max) sounds like a lot, but some jail time should (must) be done in order to deter.
