Red Wings’ Fischer Out at Least 4 Months

Detroit Red Wing defenseman Jiri Fischer will be sidelined from four to six months with a knee injury that will require surgery.

He has a torn anterior cruciate ligament and will be operated on in three or four weeks, a team spokesman said Wednesday.

Fischer injured his knee late in the third period of Detroit’s 4-1 victory over Nashville on Tuesday night.

New York Islander captain Michael Peca is expected to return to the lineup tonight and play a full game against the Boston Bruins. Peca wasn’t expected back for another month after tearing a ligament in his left knee in a controversial hit by Toronto Maple Leaf forward Darcy Tucker in last year’s opening round of the playoffs.... Brad Stuart ended a 15-game holdout, signing a three-year contract worth about $5 million with the San Jose Sharks.... Defenseman Jason Woolley, blamed for the Buffalo Sabres’ ineffective power play, was put on waivers.
