132 Asbestos Claimants to Get Payment

Exxon Mobil Corp. agreed to pay $264,000 to settle asbestos claims against it, leaving Union Carbide Corp. the lone defendant in what was a mass trial of asbestos claims in West Virginia.
Under the settlement, Exxon Mobil agreed to pay 132 people about $2,000 each.
The case being heard in a Charleston courtroom once involved nearly 8,000 claims against more than 250 corporations. Settlements whittled down the defendants to three--Union Carbide, now owned by Dow Chemical Co.; Mobil, now Exxon Mobil; and Amchem, which was dismissed from the case Tuesday.
