A 14-year-old Nordhoff High School student was taken into custody Thursday night on suspicion of aiming a plastic replica of a submachine gun at passing motorists in downtown Ojai, authorities said Friday.
An unidentified passerby called sheriff’s deputies about 7 p.m. Thursday and reported seeing someone aiming a gun at drivers near Rincon Street and East Ojai Avenue, authorities said. Due to the nature of the report and the recent East Coast sniper attacks, a team of six deputies responded and surrounded the area.
The boy, whom authorities would not identify, was spotted within minutes, Ventura County Sheriff’s Sgt. Ken Edling said.
The boy was driven home and released to the custody of his parents.
