Redesigned and True to Its Nature

TIMES STAFF WRITER

This Little Holmby house was redesigned by Michael Maltzan, who spent seven years working for Frank Gehry before opening his own office in 1995.

In June, the temporary home of New York’s Museum of Modern Art, which was designed by Maltzan, was completed. The building in Queens includes features such as a series of block letters on the roof that slide into focus, forming the letters M-O-M-A. Maltzan also designed the new Kidspace Museum in Pasadena and a renovation of the UCLA Hammer Museum in Westwood.

About this home: The building is a major remodel of a house constructed in 1954. The property has been owned for the last 2 1/2 years by developer Tony Nicholas, who rebuilt the house according to Maltzan’s design, with the intent of selling it. The house was recently completed but hasn’t yet been occupied. The design represents Maltzan’s interpretation of California living at its finest.
