Van Wreck in Logging Area Kills 14 Workers

A van full of migrant workers veered off a one-lane bridge and plunged into a river in the northern Maine wilderness, killing 14 people in the deadliest traffic accident in state history, officials said.
The accident was on an unpaved logging road near the entrance to the Allagash Wilderness Waterway, a state-administered area 300 miles north of Portland. Police and divers had to use float planes and helicopters to get to the site.
The sole survivor of the accident said the van was going 70 mph, police said. There is no speed limit on privately owned logging roads.
