Williams Cruises to Easy Win in Mayoral Primary

Mayor Anthony A. Williams put a campaign scandal behind him as he rode a massive write-in vote to a primary election victory that all but assured him a second term as leader of the nation’s capital.
The city’s elections board had warned residents that results of Tuesday’s voting might not come for more than a week, as 91% of the votes were write-in ballots that had to be tallied by hand.
But the count was done in two days. Williams drew 61,848 votes; his closest rival, write-in candidate Willie Wilson, got 20,689.
