Furniture Maker With Staff of 50 Plans to Close

Wambold Furniture Co., which once employed more than 600 workers but now has 50, has notified the city that it expects to close its doors by the end of the month.
The manufacturer of oak furniture, which has a 100,000-square-foot factory on Smith Road, told the city about six weeks ago that it would cease operations, Assistant City Manager Brian Gabler said.
The company cited competition from cheaper imported wood furniture and wood products as its reason to close the factory, officials said.
