Mosul

Kirkuk

Kurdish fighters, elements of the U.S. 173rd Airborne Brigade and Special Forces troops enter the city, meeting little resistance. Iraqi soldiers flee the city as the Kurdish and U.S. troops advance. It is the first major city in Iraq’s northern area to fall to coalition forces. The valuable oil fields are intact, with just one well fire burning.

Tikrit

Allied bombers strike Saddam Hussein’s hometown, targeting a barracks and retreat for leaders being used for command and control.

Western Iraq

Allied planes bomb Iraqi positions near Syria, where Special Forces troops are trying to prevent missile launches.

Khanaqin

Kurdish forces backed by U.S. Special Forces troops move into the city. Crowds greet them with flowers and candy.
