An ‘Almighty’ seal of approval

Malaysian film censors have ruled that the Hollywood comedy “Bruce Almighty” can be shown in the mostly Muslim country’s cinemas despite objections from the religious affairs minister, its distributor said Monday.
“They viewed it from every angle and found it was a typical Jim Carrey comedy, with nothing sensitive about it,” said Anna Ng, local general manager for distributor Buena Vista.
The Universal Studios film, in which God challenges Bruce (Carrey) to see if he can run the world better after he blames the Almighty for all his problems, was passed by Malaysian censors and was to have opened in cinemas on Aug. 7. But Religious Affairs Minister Abdul Hamid Zainal Abidin forced a review, saying, “We cannot equate ourself with God Almighty, even as a joke.”
Ng said the movie would now open in early September.
