An Oxnard man was arrested on suspicion of murder and drunk driving Monday following a crash that killed his 22-year-old passenger, authorities said.
Francisco Alcala Heredia of Oxnard died at the scene on Potrero Road near the Cal State Channel Islands campus, the California Highway Patrol reported.
Jaime Mendez Amezcua, also 22, was driving a 1997 Honda Accord when he failed to negotiate a curve and lost control about 2 p.m., striking the center divider.
Amezcua was seriously injured and airlifted to St. John’s Regional Medical Center in Oxnard, where he was being treated Monday night.
Authorities said Amezcua will be booked into Ventura County Jail when he recovers from his injuries.
Amezcua also could be charged with driving without a driver’s license.
The exact cause of the crash remained under investigation.
