Big dance plans in Melbourne

The Melbourne International Arts Festival will open this year with what the Australian newspaper the Age says is likely to be the biggest production of Gene Kelly’s “Singin’ in the Rain” dance routine ever staged, featuring a cast of thousands.
That’s because it’s open to anyone.
The festival has hired dance director Drew Anthony to teach the routine to everyone who shows up in Federation Square on Oct. 9. The famed 1952 film will then be screened for the dancers.
The public dance classes will continue throughout the 17-day festival, featuring a different genre each night, from tap and hip-hop to salsa and line dancing.
