Martha Stewart failed to pay almost $39,000 in maintenance charges on her New York condominium, leading the company that manages the building to file a lien against her, according to documents filed with the city.
Stewart, the former chief executive of Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia Inc., did not pay the $4,304.14 she owed for each of the months from February through October, according to the papers, which were filed by the board of managers of the West Perry Condominium and dated Oct. 14.
Stewart is scheduled to be tried in January on charges that she conspired to obstruct a government investigation into her sale of ImClone Systems Inc. stock. She has tried to sell the condominium, beginning at least in August 2002, according to news reports. Stewart reportedly paid $6 million for the condo in 2000.
Stewart’s spokeswoman, Anna Cordasco, said the lien “isn’t an issue” because the maintenance charges have been paid “in the last couple of days.” Cordasco said she didn’t know whether the lien has been removed from the property since the payment.
In addition to the unpaid charges, the building’s management claims attorney fees, interest and other expenses incurred in collecting the money from Stewart, the lien document states.
