Nichols’ Words Were Racist and Bigoted

Re “Nichols Urged Again to Leave City Council,” June 25:
The Anti-Defamation League applauds Mayor Steve Bromberg and the community of Newport Beach for condemning the words of Councilman Richard Nichols, who was quoted as saying, “With grass we usually get Mexicans coming in there [Corona del Mar State Beach] early in the morning and they claim it as theirs and it becomes their personal, private grounds all day.” Even if it is true that he was “quoted out of context,” one can question why there needs to be a demarcation identifying one segment of the population from others. If you want space on the grass, you’ve got to come early!
Either way, Nichols’ words are racist and bigoted.
