Home building in state is still strong

Fueled by the strong demand for housing, new-home construction continued strong in April and remains on track to reach annual levels not attained since 1989, according to the California Building Industry Assn.
Construction began on 11,356 new single-family homes in April, as measured by building permits issued by cities and counties statewide. That figure was up 1.9% from March and down 1.5% compared with April 2002.
Nationally, construction spending fell in April for the third straight month as spending on both residential and nonresidential projects declined. Building overall dropped 0.3% to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $862.6 billion after falling 1% in March, the Commerce Department reported.
