Moeller Lifts Diamondbacks

PHOENIX — Chad Moeller hit a tiebreaking, two-run home run in the seventh inning, and the Arizona Diamondbacks climbed above .500 for the first time this season with a 5-3 victory over the Cincinnati Reds on Saturday night.

John Patterson worked a career-high 7 2/3 innings for the Diamondbacks, whose four-game winning streak is their longest since ending last season with a four-game sweep against Colorado. Arizona has won six of its last seven.

Steve Finley had a two-run double for the Diamondbacks, who beat the Reds for the 13th consecutive time.

Patterson (1-3) gave up three runs and seven hits, and struck out seven. He finished with a flourish, striking out Jose Guillen before being replaced by Eddie Oropesa, who got Ken Griffey Jr., on a called third strike.

Jose Valverde worked the ninth for his sixth save.

Red starter Jimmy Anderson (1-4) fell behind, 3-0, in the first inning when he walked Robby Hammock -- his second walk -- to load the bases and Finley followed with a two-run bloop double.

Hammock scored an unearned run on a passed ball by Jason LaRue.

But after that, the Red left-hander retired 15 batters in a row before Lyle Overbay doubled with one out in the seventh. Moeller, the next batter, pulled the first pitch 393 feet into the left-field seats.

Anderson gave up five runs and five hits in seven innings.

Cincinnati pulled to within 3-2 in the third, when LaRue doubled and scored on Juan Castro’s single.

After two out, Guillen had a run-scoring single to center, but the threat ended when first baseman Overbay cut off Finley’s throw from the outfield and tagged Guillen between first and second.
