Inglewood Police Officer John Frederick Lee Small, a former National Football League player, was killed in a three-vehicle accident on the Pomona Freeway in Diamond Bar late Monday, authorities said.
California Highway Patrol officers said a car driven by a 16-year-old girl veered into a utility truck to her right after drifting onto the shoulder of the roadway, sending both vehicles skidding across all five eastbound lanes of the freeway and hitting Small, who was riding his police motorcycle.
Small, 39, was taken to Pomona Valley Hospital, where he died of his injuries, authorities said. No one else was seriously hurt in the crash.
Small, a five-year veteran of the Inglewood Police Department, played football for the University of Washington and the Pittsburgh Steelers.
