Congress Backed Bush on Use of Force in Iraq

Re “The Loyal Opposition Goes AWOL,” Commentary, April 29: It’s amazing, but not surprising, that Joyce Appleby assumes a Congress voting to support President Bush’s go-ahead to use force in Iraq is a Congress obviously derelict in its duty. Is that because she disagreed with its decision? I assume so. Congress, particularly the Democrats, has proven to not be a rubber stamp for the administration.

So, I also assume it supported the resolution because a majority of Americans let Congress know how they felt.

Recently, in Fallouja, Iraq, occupying U.S. troops fired on a group of Iraqi civilian protesters, killing more than 10 and injuring about 75 (April 30).

Are we seeing the beginnings of a vicious circle of Iraqi antagonism toward Americans and violent response by our troops? Perhaps we can learn from the efforts to maintain order and suppress violence by Israel in its occupied territories or by Russia in Chechnya.

Re “U.S. Radically Cutting Military Presence in Saudi Arabia,” April 30: Bush has accomplished what Osama bin Laden set out to do. Bin Laden’s original goal was to remove the infidel American troops from Saudi Arabia’s sacred soil. Bush did it.
