From Times Staff and Wire Reports
Rescue workers crawled over muddy debris and the mangled remains of inns looking for survivors of a flash flood that swept through the Indonesian mountain resort of Bukit Lawang.
North Sumatra Gov. Rizal Nurdin said the death toll had risen to 170, “according to the available data.”
Only about 85 bodies had been recovered, but many more people were missing and hopes of finding any alive were small.
Five foreign tourists were among those killed in the disaster along the Bahorok River in Gunung Leuser national park.
