Yemeni security forces in Sana, the capital, detained a local leader of Al Qaeda who had evaded arrest despite being high on the Arab state’s wanted list for nearly two years, media said.
The official Yemeni news agency Saba said Mohammed Hamdi Ahdal, also known as Abu Asem Ahdal, surrendered to police after they surrounded a house where he had been hiding.
Yemen’s state media have said Ahdal is a Saudi-born Yemeni activist who had been involved in conflicts in Bosnia, Chechnya and Afghanistan.
