Contempt Ruling Sought for Interior Secretary

Attorneys for hundreds of thousands of Native Americans asked a federal appeals court to reinstate a contempt of court reprimand of Interior Secretary Gale A. Norton.
A U.S. district judge held Norton in civil contempt almost a year ago, ruling that her department “committed fraud on the court” by deceiving the judge about progress toward fixing a system for managing oil, gas, timber and grazing royalties from American Indian-owned land. An appeals court panel vacated the contempt citation in July.
