Ban on Development Punishes Future Renters

Re “Builder Given 5-Year Penalty,” Aug. 29: A builder has illegally torn down an old Queen Anne-style cottage without an approved demolition permit. The Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety decided to prohibit the development of this site for five years as punishment for the illegal demolition. While I agree with the concept of punishment in this case, I do not agree with a five-year moratorium on development.
A more appropriate solution would be to have the developer agree to make a cash donation to the Los Angeles Conservancy for rehabilitation of other old houses at Angelino Heights or other appropriate locations.
To let this land sit vacant for five years while we need more housing is not reasonable.
