KARACHI, Pakistan — Unidentified gunmen stormed into a police station in the southern city of Karachi today and opened fire, killing five officers in a dawn attack.
A large pool of blood outside the bullet-pocked police station led authorities to believe that one attacker was killed, said Tariq Jamil, police deputy inspector general for Karachi.
The assault hit a small police post near the airport at Karachi, Pakistan’s largest city and the scene of frequent extremist violence.
Ten gunmen entered the station and shouted, “We will not leave any police alive!” Officer Abdul Khaliq Shaikh said.
He said five police officers were killed.
Policeman Mohammed Hussain said the shooting occurred while he was inside a prayer room at the station, offering morning prayers.
Grabbing his weapon, Hussain returned fire from the prayer room, striking one attacker.
Hussain suffered a gunshot wound to his arm.
Attackers left in two vehicles, taking their injured with them, Jamil said.
Authorities had no immediate information on the motive for the attack.
Jamil said it would be premature for authorities to discuss what group was to blame.
“Of course this is terrorism, but we don’t know what kind yet,” Shaikh said.
