North Torrance senior Matt Bautista defeated Kip Wells of New Mexico, 9-2, to finish first in the 103-pound weight class at the National High School Coaches Assn.’s National Championships on Sunday in Cleveland.
Bautista was California’s only wild-card entry, meaning he participated despite failing to place among the top eight at the state finals.
“I tend to do better at tournaments that are really far away,” said Bautista who will wrestle next season at Central Iowa Community College.
Temecula Valley’s David Navarette took fifth at 103 pounds, and Santa Ana Calvary Chapel’s David Juaregui placed fifth at 140.

Boys’ Tennis
Anaheim Esperanza (10-2, 3-0) is atop the Sunset League standings, but a familiar opponent stands in its way.
The Aztecs play host to league rival Los Alamitos (7-0, 2-0) today at 2:30 p.m. in a matchup that Esperanza Coach Keri Wood has had circled since the start of the season.
In Wood’s three-plus seasons at Esperanza, the Aztecs have only beaten Los Alamitos once, last season.
Wood said Esperanza has an advantage at the top as its No. 1 singles player, senior Daniel Ikuta, faces sophomore Taylor Leiby in the first set.
