A city police officer has been killed on duty, the first such death since the department was founded in 1889.
Officer Stephan Gray, 34, was shot and killed about 7:30 p.m. Thursday after pulling over a vehicle. The suspect was still at large Friday.
Gray, a seven-year veteran, was assigned to the special operations unit, and worked on street-level narcotics and gang violence suppression.
Officers were searching for a man they identified as 21-year-old Tahua “Tao” Rivera, the Merced Sun-Star reported.
