Judge Backs Clinton’s Creation of Monument

A federal judge in Salt Lake City affirmed then-President Clinton’s establishment of the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, rejecting claims that the president had overstepped his bounds.
U.S. District Judge Dee Benson dismissed a 1997 lawsuit brought by an association of Utah counties that claimed the president had violated provisions of the 1906 Antiquities Act in creating the monument in the southern part of the state.
“We’re thrilled,” said Steve Bloch, staff attorney for the Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance.
