The former chief financial officer for the Los Angeles chapter of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals pleaded no contest Thursday to grand theft and filing a false income tax return, a tax board official said.
Kenneth R. Brookwell, 63, of Rancho Mirage was arrested April 8 and charged with failing to report more than $730,000 in embezzled income during three years starting in 1999, said Barry Gilbert, a spokesman for the state Franchise Tax Board.
In a plea agreement, Brookwell will be sentenced May 5 to two years in state prison and pay full restitution to the SPCA, Gilbert said. Brookwell was financial officer and vice president of the SPCA beginning in 1999.
