Wie Ousted in Women’s Amateur

Michelle Wie squandered a late lead Thursday, losing the last three holes and her second-round match to In-Bee Park at the U.S. Women’s Amateur golf tournament at Erie, Pa.

Wie led 2-up heading to the 16th hole at the Kahkwa Club but was eliminated early for the second consecutive year. Wie, 14, lost in the first round in 2003.

“I knew she was going to come back,” Wie said. “I left myself in a really hard position.”

All square going to the par-four 18th, Wie hit her second shot within 15 feet. Park’s second shot landed about 60 feet from the hole.

Park, of Henderson, Nev., hit her putt close, and Wie conceded it. Wie knocked her birdie putt several feet past the hole and the match ended when her second putt hit the edge of the cup and rolled away.

Pro Basketball

The Clippers signed 7-foot free-agent center Zeljko Rebraca, a native of Serbia and Montenegrao who had played for the Detroit Pistons before being traded to the Atlanta Hawks in the Rasheed Wallace deal.

Rebraca, 32, also played 11 seasons in Europe before joining the Pistons in 2001. In four NBA seasons, Rebraca averaged 6.3 points and 4.3 rebounds.

The New Jersey Nets signed free-agent guard Ron Mercer to a two-year contract worth slightly more than $3 million.... The Orlando Magic re-signed guard DeShawn Stevenson, who averaged 11.4 points and 3.7 rebounds last season.

The New Jersey Devils avoided arbitration with Brian Rafalski, signing the veteran defenseman to a one-year contract worth $3.1 million.

The Phoenix Coyotes signed center Mike Comrie, 24, to a two-year contract.... The Minnesota Wild avoided arbitration with left wing Andrew Brunette and defenseman Willie Mitchell, re-signing both players to one-year, $1.7-million contracts.... The New York Islanders agreed to terms with defenseman Janne Niinimaa on a three-year contract, avoiding salary arbitration.

Soccer

French star Zinedine Zidane retired from international soccer, ending his career with the national team after guiding it to the 1998 World Cup championship. Zidane, 32, played 93 times for the national team, scoring 26 goals. He is expected to continue playing for Real Madrid until his contract ends in 2007.

Galaxy defender Chris Albright was suspended for two games by Major League Soccer for a retaliation foul on MetroStar defender Chris Leitch.... San Jose Earthquake President Alexi Lalas was fined $500 for criticizing officials.... The Dallas Burn announced that it would change its name to FC Dallas at the end of the season.

Tennis

French Open champion Anastasia Myskina beat fifth-seeded Iveta Benesova, 6-3, 6-4, to reach the semifinals of the Idea Prokom Open at Sopot, Poland.

Top-seeded Marion Bartoli was upset by unseeded Camille Pin, 6-3, 5-7, 6-2, in the second round of the Vancouver Open in Canada.

Passings

Al Tate, a former Wichita State basketball star, has died. He was 66. Tate, who averaged 14.6 points and 9.9 rebounds in three seasons, died Saturday of pancreatic cancer at his home in Hacienda Heights.
