The Louvre is just too full of art, and relief is now on the way.
The French government has announced plans to build the Louvre II, an offshoot of the famed Paris museum, in northern France as a home for much of its art now sitting in storage.
Prime Minister Jean-Pierre Raffarin said that Lens, in a region hurt by the loss of many industrial sector jobs, won the six-city contest to house the art.
The 236,808-square-foot museum will cost about $139 million to build. It is to feature 500 to 600 works from the Louvre’s reserves and will open in 2008.
