Re “Planting Seeds of Wrath in ‘Steinbeck Country,’ ” Nov. 26: Monterey County’s Salinas library crisis is not unique. San Luis Obispo County voters rejected Measure L, a straightforward attempt to raise sales tax revenue 1/4 % -- limited to five years -- to fund its ailing library system. This indifference to funding critical infrastructure is a disturbing trend nationwide.
We are told that voters have overwhelmingly cited moral values (i.e. “family values”) as the significant criterion for judging issues and candidates. If access to public libraries doesn’t reflect family values and democratic principles, nothing does. Forget the rhetoric; brace yourself for the continuing slide of family values, and democracy, by an uninformed and ill-served electorate.
