Orders Are Orders

Mike Lukovich’s Dec. 22 editorial cartoon “Tour Extension” brought back old memories. On a bright sunny day in July 1951, at sea on my ship, I was thinking that in two months I would go home, enroll in college on the GI Bill of Rights and enjoy a well-earned civilian life.
Then suddenly the captain’s voice came over all of the loudspeakers on the ship. They blared: “President Truman has extended the tour of duty of all servicemen scheduled for discharge in 1951 and 1952. This extension will be a one-year minimum.”
We gritted our teeth, nodded our heads and accepted the extension. Our president needed us in Korea.
