BAGHDAD — A powerful explosion in western Baghdad leveled several houses late Tuesday and killed at least 29 people, including seven police officers, police said today.
Some reports described the blast as an ambush in which police were lured to one of the homes by an anonymous report that insurgents were using the building. The explosion ripped the home apart as police were entering.
In addition to the dead, 18 people were wounded. Police said several people might be trapped in the rubble.
Arab television showed U.S. soldiers guarding the scene of the explosion in the Ghazaliya neighborhood.
