My Spanish was decent, as was my kiteboarding, so my 15-year-old Dominican instructor’s ability to speak English was not so important. He held the back of my harness as I learned to body-drag through the warm Caribbean Sea. After six days of hurricane conditions in Cabarete, Dominican Republic, the weather broke and I spent two perfect days learning to fly a 7-meter, two-line kite, before I had to surrender home.
