God Bless Americana: The Retro Holiday Slide Show: This latest edition of kitsch archeology from “histotainer” Charles Phoenix is a unique, wildly funny novelty attraction. A younger, Silver Lake version of Garrison Keillor, Phoenix offers spontaneous commentary on a selection of the vintage photographic slides from the 1940s through the 1960s that he’s collected throughout his life. Pulling facts from the slide notations, his eagle eye spots the tiniest details. If the rambling and scattershot structure scarcely develop the inherent subversive potential, both tour and guide offer fine entertainment regardless.
