Matthew Broderick and Nathan Lane have agreed to star in a film version of the Mel Brooks hit Broadway show, “The Producers.”
The movie, to be produced by Brooksfilms, is scheduled to begin production early in 2005, according to Jonathan Sanger.
The planned movie will bring the show full circle: It began as a stage show adaptation of Brooks’ 1968 film.
The film will be co-produced by Brooks and Sanger. Other key members behind the movie-turned-play-turned-movie include Brooks’ co-writer, Thomas Meehan, and Susan Stroman, who directed the original show on Broadway and who will direct the movie.
“There’s been no other casting yet,” Sanger said. “We’re in the early stages of planning. Mel and I will be talking about other casting issues.”
Universal Pictures will distribute the movie domestically.
Meanwhile, with Lane and Broderick back on Broadway, “The Producers” racked up a box office record $1.6 million last week.
