Stanford Is Still Perfect

Third-ranked Stanford stayed unbeaten with a 68-61 victory over California Saturday night in the first meeting of the season between the rivals.
Matt Lottich scored 15 points, and Justin Davis had 13 points, seven rebounds and four steals in Stanford’s 11th win in a row against California at Maples Pavilion, where a sellout crowd of 7,391 watched the Cardinal elevate their game in an up-tempo second half.
Stanford (14-0, 5-0 Pacific 10) jumped into the passing lanes, hit the floor for loose balls, went hard to the boards and pressured the Golden Bears’ talented perimeter shooters before they made a late surge.
Richard Midgley led the comeback attempt for California (6-8, 2-3), scoring all 19 of his points in the second half. His three-point basket with 3:30 left pulled the Golden Bears to within 57-52.
Midgley had another from long range in the final minute and also a three-point play before fouling out with 17 seconds left.
Stanford, the only undefeated team in the top five, has won 12 of the last 14 meetings between the schools.
After No. 1 Connecticut’s loss at ninth-ranked North Carolina on Saturday, Stanford will probably move up to No. 2 in the next poll behind Duke.
And the Cardinal also took over sole possession of first place in the Pac-10 after UCLA lost for the first time in conference play to No. 7 Arizona on Saturday.
Washington 103, Oregon State 99 -- Nate Robinson made a game-tying three-point basket at the end of regulation in Corvallis, Ore., and the Huskies scored the first five points of overtime to end a five-game conference losing streak.
Washington (6-8, 1-5) trailed by 10 points with 5:00 left in regulation, but battled back, converting lay-ups and three-point plays down the stretch as the Beavers (8-7, 2-3) failed to get back on defense.
Oregon State led, 81-77, but Tre Simmons made a three-point shot with 5.5 seconds left to get the Huskies with a point. Chris Stephens made two free throws for the Beavers, but Robinson made the three-point basket at the buzzer to force overtime.
Oregon 60, Washington State 45 -- The Ducks (8-4, 3-2), who lead the nation in three-point shooting percentage at 42.9%, made 10 of 18 at Eugene, Ore. Guard Luke Jackson led the way, making five of seven attempts.
The Cougars (8-8, 2-4) used their tough defense and methodical offense, however, to hold the Ducks to their lowest point total of the season, and only one basket in the final 10:52.
Oregon countered by allowing the fewest number of points to an opponent since beating USC, 53-40, on Jan. 7, 1988.
