SUV isn’t needed for Mojave drive
Please find a more mature travel writer than Susan Spano, who seems to think that one needs a Ford Expedition for two people to go for a drive in the Mojave desert [“Mojave Milestones,” Jan. 11]. To top it off, she thinks it is cool to put $50 worth of gasoline in the tank. We have enough crazies buying and driving huge gas guzzlers. We don’t need the Los Angeles Times to encourage them.

We celebrated New Year’s on the Mojave Road. There is a lot to see, and I recommend at least three days on the trail. I offer off-road driving training and guided tours, and my first rule of off-road safety is: Take lots of friends so there are at least two vehicles. Although the Mojave Road is not extreme four-wheeling, it puts you miles from help, and frequently no cell service is available.
