A fire that broke out in a marriage hall in India burned at least 30 people to death, and 50 were injured as wedding guests stampeded down a narrow staircase to escape the blazing building, police said.
District Police Commissioner Sunil Kumar Singh confirmed that 30 bodies were recovered, and said 10 were probably still inside the building in Srirangam, a Hindu temple town south of Madras.
Singh said the fire was probably caused by an electrical short-circuit.
