I-5 Lanes Are Closed as Man Threatens to Jump

Southbound traffic on Interstate 5 in San Clemente was disrupted Tuesday night as negotiators from the Orange County Sheriff’s Department talked with a man they believed was threatening to jump from an overpass at Avenida Pico.
Three hours into the ordeal, the man was still in danger.
“We got dispatched here to set up a perimeter,” said Lt. Bill Hunt, a department spokesman, adding that the southbound lanes were closed just north of Pico. The street was also shut down in both directions, he said.
“Traffic was stacked up for the first hour or so” until it could be diverted onto side streets, Hunt said.
