East Carolina right-hander Greg Bunn struck out a career-high 11 in eight innings Monday in a 7-0 victory over North Carolina Wilmington at Kinston, N.C., sending the Pirates to the NCAA super-regionals.
East Carolina (51-11) is playing at South Carolina (48-15) beginning Saturday in one of the eight best-of-three super-regionals. The winner advances to the College World Series in Omaha.
Long Beach State and Cal State Fullerton are hosts in the same year for the first time since the super-regional format was introduced in 1999.
Long Beach (39-19), a first-time super-regional host, is playing Arizona beginning Friday at 7 p.m. Saturday’s game is 4 p.m. and, if necessary, Sunday’s game is at 3 or 6 p.m.
Cal State Fullerton (40-21), playing in its fourth super-regional in six years, faces Tulane starting Saturday at 7 p.m. Sunday’s game is at 6 p.m. and, if necessary, Monday’s game is at 4 p.m.
Other super-regional matchups are Vanderbilt at Texas, Florida State at Arkansas, Texas A&M; at Louisiana State, Georgia at Georgia Tech and Florida at Miami. All games will be televised by ESPN or ESPN2, along with the network’s pay-per-view package.
