Board Will Close School to Save Money

The school board has voted to close an elementary school to save money.
Manzanita Elementary School became a victim of the Monterey Peninsula district’s budget problems. Students there will attend a school serving grades one through eight.
The district has closed another elementary school in Monterey, combining classes at another middle school to absorb the students.
School officials met late into Monday night to consider possible cuts. If the district cannot resolve its financial woes in three weeks, the state and county could take control of the district.
