New Evidence of Wintry Demise for Dinosaurs

Fossil plankton dating from 65 million years ago help to confirm the theory that a dark winter lasting thousands of years doomed the dinosaurs, researchers report in this week’s issue of the journal Geology.
At a Tunisian site called El Kef, Dutch and Italian researchers found fossils of cold-loving ocean organisms called dinoflagellates and benthic formanifera. They seem to have appeared suddenly in a sea that had previously been very warm.
